Nanometrology Summer Internships

Background Info

NMI’s Nanometrology group is offering up to four unpaid student internships over the summer vacation period, from end November 2016 to February 2017 (up to 12 weeks).

During this internship you will gain some hands-on experience in a laboratory.  To be eligible to undertake a student placement at NMI, you must be willing to undergo entry level security clearance.

Project Description

During the course of the internship, successful applicants will work on a project contributing to one of Nanometrology’s three main areas of research:
• Development and operation of a metrological scanning probe microscope (mSPM) to provide traceable dimensional measurements at the nanometre scale;
• Upgrade of Atomic force microscope (AFM): integrating upgraded sample stage with AFM hardware and software;
• Physico-chemical characterisation of nanomaterials using a wide method of analytical techniques.

Project topics are flexible and can be tailored to an individual student’s preferences and/or background. Possible tasks include the evaluation of the performance of opto-mechanical components of the mSPM, optimisation of the mSPM’s tuning-fork probe head, and the comparison of different nanoparticle sizing techniques for the characterisation of complex particle systems, including weighing,
